Can anyone ID this badge?

#1

Post by valkyrie » 31 Jul 2005, 19:17

This is probably an obvious question but I would like to know if anyone can ID the rightmost breast pocket badge worn by Paul von Hase as C.O. of Berlin Garrison in 1944. Also, as he won the EKi & II and black wound badge in WWI, would have worn a WWI or WWII design badge in 1944? i.e. - did the WWI awards undergo any redesign for later wear?

I've attached a photo.

I need to know because I'm sculpting his portrait bust in 1/6th scale and the bust will be painted in oils.

Thanks in advance

to me it looks like the Sportabzeichen (still exists today).
You got / get the badge for exercising and succeding in five different sport diciplines.

It's awarded in bronze, silver and gold.

Yes, it looks like the Deutsches Reichs-Sportabzeichen. However, I can’t tell if it’s the version with the initials “DRA” (Deutscher Reichs-Ausschuss) or “DRL” (Deutscher Reichsbund für Leibesübungen). The “DRL” version replaced the earlier one in 1933. In 1937 the badge was modified to incorporate the swastika. Prior to this the badge featured a plain bow at the bottom of the wreath.

RE the Wound Badge: A recipient of a WWI pattern badge continued to wear it throughout WWII. The exception being if he was wounded again in WWII and was entitled to the next higher grade (silver or gold) in which case he would be awarded the 1939 version.

Best regards,
Shawn

Hello,

Yes, I also believe that it is a DRL or DRA. Can't comment on which one for sure.

Here's a pic of the todays Sportabzeichen.
It's the golden version...

The letters DSB stand for Deutscher Sport Bund

Thanks again for the help. Would the WWLL version hacve had a swastika in place of the ribbon?

When I finish my portrait of von Hase, I will try to remeber to post it in this foum's modeling section.

Regards

Colin

Hello,

The 1933 version does not, but there is a version with a swastika. I do not know when it was introduced. Here are some photos that I found during an Internet search. I do not own these badges and they are just a representation being used.
