#1

Post by bearn » 30 Aug 2005, 12:03

I search for the photographs of tank Pz that IV screened by track-links from the Soviet tank T -34. There is only one such photograph?

With best regards, Vasily Diounov.

There are two other images, one more of this vehicle and another one in same convoy also using T34 tracks as protection. They are photographed close up, slightly from the right as the vehicles pass.
IIRC the turret numbers are visible, quite small and dark without an edge - 911 and 91? I think.
Images in Ground Power, I will try and post them.

The reason they put the track links was for additional protection right?

Yes that is right Pzgr-Wolf. I do also think that this was a way to carry extra extensions of tracks if repairs were needed. Of course in this case since the tracks are from a T-34 they are only for protection!

How much protection do these track links offer?
BTW how much weight was added and what did all this weight do to the performance?

The enemy projectile would hit and richochet on the track link(hopefully) Like how it would work on the side armour skirts of the Panzer IV. Track links are heavy.. so i think it would most likely affect on the speed on the tank.

So they are. I missed the cut-outs in the track bars.

Nice Pic!!

But how does tracklinks compare to armor?
So what is the best shell defeating tracklink?
Are there pics of tracks that were hit?

Good day comrades

I think Micheal you were initially right cause these tracks seem to be wider then Panther tracks. But could you explain what you mean with the cut outs? Thanks in advance

Greg :D

It's Panther track as it has two slots in the casting for the sprocket teeth The Tiger only has one on the outside as the inner set of sprocket teeth move against the outer edge of the track link. The Panther ont he other hand has the track overlapping the sprocket and thus two "Holes" are needed to guide and pull the track over the sprocket. I hope this is a clearer answer than our friend Pzgr-Wolf's.
By way of illustration take a look here at the Tiger (©WWIIin Color)

Then here for the Panther
