Bergepanzers
Bergepanzers
When were the first bergepanzers developed and deployed? Which models came first? The Bergepanzer III, then the Bergepanzer IV, then the Bergepanzer(P) followed by the Bergepanthers Ausf D then Ausf A/G What version was the Bergepanzer III's based on or were they built on repaired tanks? Was it the same for the IV's?
The VK 36.01 was the first attempt at a fully-tracked recovery tank, renamed VKz 35.01 they were intended to recover broke down tigers, but there is no evidence had any VK 36.01 were converted to recovery tanks. In June 1943 12 Panthers Ausf.Ds were built without turrets as recovery tanks. In August 1943 3 Tiger(p)s were built as recover tanks. In July 1943 Panthers were built as purpose built recovery tanks with a winch. In March 1944 Panzer IIIs were rebuilt as recovery tanks. In May 1944 Bergepanzer 38 stared being built. In October 1944 Panzers IVs were converted into recovery tanks.
Interesting
I would have tought that the bergepanzers would have followed the development of each vehicle. Were they using FAMO's for all the recovery of armored vehicles upto june 1943?
Most complete publication about Bergepanzer (IMHO) is PANZER TRACTS No 16 "Bergepanzer 38 to Bergepanther" - with information about Bergepanzer on the chassis Hetzer, Pz III, Pz IV, Elefant, Panther.RB wrote:Does anyone have photos and information about Bergepz. III and Bergepz. IV???
Please post what you know about this rare vehicles!
Thx!

Bergepanzer IV ?
I might be wrong, but:
That "Bergepanzer IV" Bearn posted has been described as being a Munitionsträger IV (ammunition carrier) in another thread lately IIRC, found by the Soviet Army in Lake Balaton area, Hungary after the heavy fighting there in March 1945 and marked as wreck # 211.
Just my 2 cents
Matthias

For which the transporter of ammunition has on the boards boxes for the spare wheels even two keys of large size? In Panzertracts No 16 drawings for Bergepanzer IV - these machines have the same elements.
But of course, i can mistaken...
