Deepening in this Waffen-SS Division, somebody can post more data about its military actions, soldiers nationality, medals and primary information of this elite unit?

I was interested on this division months ago, but I didn´t find any important or valuable information.

Hello Zabrali,

Are you sure that Hstuf Ewald Glatzel was CO from Stabsbatterie with SS-Panzer-Artillerie-Regiment 18 in 1944???
My info is that he was commander of 1. Batterie with I. SS-FlaK-Abteilung I from Kommandostab 'RFSS' in 1944......

Hope somebody can help us clear this one up.
Thanks,
Mike

The 18.SS-Pz.Gren.Division "HW" was certainly not an elite unit. it fought very poorly in Ungary and in Slovakia due to the lack of motivation of its Volksdeutsche recruits. Only Riepe and Lipinski's Kampfgruppen fought well against a russian breakthrough. But this breakthrough did happen because the lines of the division had not been properly held. Many desertions were reported.
Concerning Fink, he was a former Luftwaffe officer with only limited engineer knowledge (or with no knowledge at all).

If I am not mistaken, there is a full French platoon/company attached to this division when it was in action in Galicia, Ukraine in 1943 or 1944

According to Robert Forbes' "For Europe",the 1st Battalion of the French SS-Sturmbrigade arrived in Turka ,90 kilometers of Sanok on 5th of August 1944 and became IV.Battalion of SS-Kampfgruppe "Schäfer"(of 18 SS)

Hi Kamehouse

You're right about the 1st Battalion of the French SS Sturmbrigade. There is also an incident where a French SS trooper was court martialed and sentenced to death because he shot a German SS NCO who misused the battalion's transport vehicles without even helping the wounded French and German SS troops after a battle.

True but it wasn't a German NCO,the person who was killed was Unterscharführer Eglé. He was a French from Alsace (Mabire incorrectly wrote he was German). The man who killed him, Oberjunker Abel Chapy ironically survived the war in prison.
