Dear Bill

His only "command" was

01.07.1944 - 09.08.1944 Stellvertretender Kommandierender General des II. SS-Panzerkorps (ohne Kommandogewalt, lediglich zur “Beobachtung“)

He suffered on a larynx-cancer (vocal-chord)

The 17th SS Corps was assigned to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early April of 1945. The British liberators noticed that the SS troops spoke Hungarian and wore Hungarian medals. There were about 250 to 300 of them left by April 20, 1945 to surrender to the British and Canadian forces. All most all of the 17th SS Corps was composed of 30,000 to 50,000 pro facist Hungarian refugees who were stranded in Austria at the end of the war. They had few weapons and very few were of military age and gender.

As for the XVII SS Corps formation I have: An estimated 260 men, including a motorcycle, translation, signals and guards units. Few senior staff roles had been assigned, as this unit was never fully created.

That reminds me of the thread on the Dachau guards, in which Rob pointed out that there is no evidence that the Totenkopf guards had been replaced with (Hungarian) Waffen-SS units immediately before the liberation:

Sounds like an analogy.

Well , my problem is that I have a few hungarian war graves here , between Celle and Uelzen , but , as far it was possible to recheck this , none of this was a hungarian SS-Man ...

I have ung. BauBtl. , replacement unit the the Panzertruppenschule , "normal" training Btls. but still no evidence for SS ...

Thats why I am asking
