Hi!

Was the Italian Army post/rank of "Comandante designato d'armata" the same as "Generale designato d'armata"?

Yes. See the official website of Italian Army: http://www.esercito.difesa.it/root/Unif ... e_2GMg.asp

It was a rank intermediate between Generale di Corpo d'Armata and Generale di Armata.
