#1

Post by RS 1800 » 09 Jan 2006, 21:51

On the night of june the 12th-13th 1944, Wachtels regiment the 155 Flak regiment was instructed to go ahead and launch the first V1's, due to some delay it took few days before the first V1's to be launched. Alot of this info can be found in the regiments war diary (wich i do not posess), does anyone have anymore info on this regiment, from june the 6:th, 1944.

Thank you, will look around for that book. But before i do that, can anyone confirm if Abteilung 4 and Abteilung 8, was part of the 155 Flak Regiment, and stationed on the Cotentin peninsula, Normandy. All my V1 literature is in french and im not very good at it

155 (W) only had I. - IV. Abt. in 1943 and I. - III. Abt. in 1944, but I don't know their locations other than the Beauvais - Saleux area in northern France. Each Abteilung had 6 Batterien.

My, my! I. - IX. Abteilungen! That really lets the air out of Herr Tessin's balloon, doesn't it? I wonder why Tessin was so far off the mark on this one? Do we know if Abteilungen V. - IX. actually existed, or were they planned? Certainly the one in Normandy was never completed and the sites manned and operational. I suppose the details are buried in the author's book.

Thanks for that link, that seems to confirm that there where a IV and VIII abteilung on the Cotentin.

In 1944 it would have looked something like this:

IV. Abteilung, Command Post at Château de Martinvast

1. Batterie, Command Post at Nouainville

- Wasserwerk: No. 2
- Stellungen alter Bauart (Large sites): No. 11, 12, 13 and 14.
- Midsize sites: No. 245
- Light sites: No. 143, 144, 145, 146 and 147

2.Batterie, Command Post at château de l'Ermitage

- Stellungen alter Bauart (Large sites): No. 15, 16, 17 and 18.
- Light sites: No. 139, 140, 141 and 148.

VII. Abteilung, Command Post at Orglandes

1. Batterie, Command Post at St-Savueur-le-Vicomte.

- Light sites: No. 223, 224, 225, 230 and 231.

2. Batterie, Command Post at Quettot

- Light sites: No. 226, 229, 239, 241 and 242.

3. Batterie, Command Post at Négreville

- Light sites: No. 227, 228, 237, 238 and 240.

4. Batterie, Command Post at Tamerville

- Light sites: No. 232, 233, 234, 235 and 236.

There should also have been.

Versorgungs-Stellen

1008 - Bricquebec
1009 - Valognes/Yvetot-Bocage

Wasserwerk

2 - Équeurdreville-Hainnville

There are a few good maps in this book, also maps of all V1 sites on the Cotentin

....that seems to confirm that there where a IV and VIII abteilung on the Cotentin.
Rawson, Andrew. Cherbourg. Battleground Europe series. Barnsley: Pen & Sword, 2004. pp.44-45, 82, 99 and 179.

The above has several casual references to the Contentin sites along with a few photos. A number of the sites were completed or nearly completed, with construction having only begun in spring 1944. However, it does not appear that they had been manned, stocked up and declared operational prior to 6 June.

If you come upon anything that contradicts this, please let us know.

I think we need the war diary of the 155. But you are probably right, i havent found any info that actually proves that rockets where launched from the Cotentin bases, and if they did fire any it should have been between the 12-13th of june and a few days before the 27th of june when Cherbourg fell.

All the bases on the cotentin had their launch ramps pointed at targets in the South-West of England, like Briston, Plymouth, Dorchester.

Im trying to find som info my french book, but nothing yet.

Some notes.
On the 18th of November 1943, six of the 8 battalions hade been transfered to their bases.
Rockets pointed at London had top priority.(Does not mention wich battalions)

Hello all

I have for a period of time been working, doing some research on the V1 / V2 and V3 sites in France.

Now i also have run into some "dead ends" and would like to ask for the help of the experts on this topic !!

Concerning the V1 sites i have placed / named the sites with the German number and the geographic name of the sites as follows: ( And have pictures of the numbered ones ).!!

Sites 11 to 18
Sites 45 / 59 / 65 / 90 / 99 / 113 / 122
Sites 139 to 148
Sites 185 / 196 / 197 / 198 / 200 / 205 / 209 / 212 / 214 / 218
Sites 223 to 242
Sites 245 / 248 / 255
Sites 608 / 620 / 623 / 633 / 635 / 640 / 641 / 643 / 645 / 646 / 647
Sites 681 / 968 / 688 / 689 / 691
Sites 1001 / 1003 / 1004 / 1014 / 1015 / 1016

As you can see i am missing some numbers / geographic names between the above mentioned, and i am interested in references as to books or archivematerial to fill out this list.

Also any references and information on the units ( Flak.Reg.155 and others ) regarding V1 - V2 and V3 sites / positions.

Does any have materials about this topic, i will be very interested in any information you can provide.

This goes for the V2 and V3 sites as well !!

There is a bit confusion about the correct german name for the sites, they are named in many different ways as to which type it is, such as:

Feltmulag / Feuerstellung / Versorgungsstelle / Wasserwerk etc, etc - but which is belonging to what sites ?

I hope someone can help me here, thanks.

Either bring the info here or by PM or: [email protected]

Regards
Kurt

Hi All

Flak-Regiment 155(W) 06-06-1944

This is from the "Kriegestagbuch" of Flak-Regiment 155 (W) also some info on the commanders

I/155 M.Aue
II/155 H.Sack
III/155 Obl.L.Dittrich

I/93 M.Schwarz
II/93 H.Leibig / M.v.Ploetz

Yes, RS 1800, you're right, especially with the flurry of new questions from Kurt. There is no reason for any question on this subject to remain unanswered given the rather numerous primary and secondary resources that exist. For example, the British Air Ministry and SHAEF produced several extremely detailed studies on the V- sites in northern France between 1944 and 1947 based on captured documents, numerous PoW interrogations of key officers and thorough on-site investigations. IIRC, War Office M.I.15 did an entire 100+-page study on just Flak-Rgt. 155(W). So there is a lot of stuff there for the truly motivated.

We have to dig deeper then, to get all the answers, but the subject is quite interesting.

The following legend was used on the old German map i posted earlier:

Einsatz - Stellungen (light sites)
Ersatz - Stellungen (backup sites)
Stellungen alter bauart (heavy sites
Total zerstörte Stellungen (Destroyed sites)
Batterie-Befehls-Stellen (Battery command post) (indicated by a strange cross with two bars)
Abteilungs-Gefechts-Stände (Abteilung command post)(indicated by a black flag on map)
Versorgungs- Stellen (indicated by white square on map)
Wasserwerk (indicated by black square on map)

The following sites on the Cotentin, was planned but never completed. Some earthwork has been spotted, but thats it;
