Mussolini quote

"It's better to live one day like a lion, than 100 years like a sheep"

Can somebody tell me if this is correctly attributed to Mussolini, or is this an old Italian proverb? I've searched on the internet and it's hard to find information that supports either origin conclusively.

Also, can someone tell me if that's the exact translation? Or does this translate slightly differently as I've heard several slightly different versions.

It's better to live one day as a lion, then 100 years as a sheep
It's better to live one day as a lion, rather than 100 years as a sheep
It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep
Better to live one day like a lion, than 100 years like a sheep

Only a slight difference, but which would be closer to the Italian?

I don't know if the proverb is The Duce© (he used it though) as there are similar (in the meaning) proverbs around, like:

is it better to lead in hell or to serve in heaven? (this proverb I have heard both in the interrogative form and in the affirmative)

I'd translate the proverb in the shortest way possible:

better 1 day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep

Best regards
