Giovinezza

I'm curious, when exactly was Giovinezza written? I've found a few places that say 1939, but I'm almost positive that I've heard recordings played before 1939. Also, if did the Fascist Party have another anthem before Giovinezza?

Good question...I believe Giovinezza had been written first around 1910 in a Turin bar as a college student's song. During WWI it was adopted by some regiment (there's debate about which....a bersaglieri bycicle battalion, IIRC) as unofficial hymn (as Garryowen for 7th Cavalry...).
At the end of war, it was the turn of the newborn fascist movement. Logically every turn caused a slight modification of text...Between 1925 and 1930 became the official anthem of fascism to be played immediately after the Royal March.

Thanks for the reply.

Okay, so Giovinezza was around during the 1920s? And if it was, did the lyrics change during the Fascist years?

I've an article for the Italian historical magazine "Millenovecento" about it. I will post more informations after see it, but I remember it's written about in the '20, and the text is changed more times. "Giovinezza" is the classic Fascist song and it was the song of the Fascist politic group, but after the Etiopic War the song "Faccetta Nera" became more used than others.
