Destruction of Telavåg 1942

Does anyone know which unit was involved in the destruction of the village of Telavåg in Norway 1942 in retaliation of the killing of two Gestapo (?) officers?

Thanks.
Probably the worst act of reprisal was the assault on the fishing village of Telavåg in the spring of 1942.
Two Gestapo officers had been shot and killed there on the 26th April 1942 by two men brought over from Shetland.
One of the agents, Arne Vaerum, was also killed in the ensuing battle, the other agent being Emil G Hvaal. They had come from Shetland, and landed outside Telavåg earlier that month.
They both belonged to the Norwegian Independent Company Number 1, popularly known as the Linge company (Kompani Linge). This company was specially trained in Scotland for missions to occupied Norway.
The German retaliation for this shooting was terrible. The male population of Telavåg was sent to a concentration camp where 31 of them died. The women and children from the village were interned. The village itself was levelled to the ground.

from source "The Bitter Years" by Richard Petrow...
it seems an informent., a Televaag woman reported in March to a member of quisling's Nasjonal Samling Party of the arrival and departure of of strangers of undercover agents general knowledge to inhabitants.

At the same time another Telvaag resident, himself pro-British, was over heard bragging to friends of had seen, weapons, ammunition, radio sets in a local farmhouse of a local merchant who was the Milorg leader of the area....

Troops of the SD swooped on the farmhouse on the morning of April 26, surprising the 2 agents in the barn loft. With their retreat cut off, the SOE agents opened fire and killed 2 German officers before they themselves where captured. Both were wounded. One died immediately, the other taken away for interrogation.

When the fruits of the interrogation were sent to the Reichskommisar Terboven, he ordered widespread reprisals against Telvaag as an example to the rest of the country.

It continues more on burning 300 houses to the ground, killing of cattle and sinking local fishing vessels...76 men where deported to Germany to concentration camps, claiming most perished before the end of the war, while the rest 260 women, children and elderly where then arrested and interned in Norway..when all was said and done Telavaag was wiped from the map...more villages where raided and assault resulting from information obtained from the local Milorg leaders and the SOE agent, but these I will not add unless requested.

as for your request Marcus as to what troops did this all that is stated is German troops did the torching of the town and rounding up civilians...German Police and Gestapo assisted by Norweigan Quislingite Police officers did further seizing resistance leaders from interrogations and information learned from the SOE and Milborg leader and torture to extract information, but no list of specific Troops or units etc. involved

Hello Marcus,

according to http://193.132.104.136/index.php?title= ... /3623-3662 the Public Records Office in Kew has an interrogation report of a SS-Unterscharführer Rudolf Hofacker relating to the Telavåg retaliations.
Catalogue Ref. WO 208/3623-3647
(LCD/203) Hofacker, Rudolf. UnterSchar (6th SS Pz. Gren.) Deportations from island of Tellevaag and executions at Bergen (Normay).
Perhaps more details are to be found there.

The two Germans killed were Gerhard Berns and Henry Bertram. Depending on what site you look they were either Kriminalrat and Kriminalsekretär or SS-Hauptsturmführer and SS-Untersturmführer. (Not that one necessarily contradicts the other.)

Dienstgrad: Hauptsturmführer
Geburtsdatum: 02.03.1903
Geburtsort: Hannover

Ill try to find some info. The KM units involved are less known.
The 31 from Telavåg that died in camps is very often mentioned. The 18 men shot because of the incident in Telavåg is often forgotten. Their names added.
