The gun looked very low to me until I realised that they'd dug holes for the wheels !

Gentlemen,

There was a discussion here about 7,62 cm Pak 36 and 39:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 0&t=143147

The consensus was that the Germans did not use the “(r)” in the designation as the guns had been modified from the original Russian models. It is the same with the 7,5 cm Pak 97/38 with no (f).

Here is a copy of a German document (from ebay.de) showing the designation without the “(r)”.

Yes, 7.62 cm Pak 36.

Here is another picture from ebay of these 2 guns. One of the 2 pictures has been inverted (unless the guns were moved in between).

Hi Emmanuel and Strum

I think Emmanuel is correct about Strum's image being inverted. The shield of a 3.7 cm Pak was higher on the layers side, left hand side. In photo Strum found on E-bay the raised part of the shield is on the right hand side of the gun.

I do wish people scan photos the right way round on E-bay. I saw an old post on another forum where there was an disagreement if a British carrier was a scout or a bren carrier.....no body had noticed the sign writting on the shop behind was back to front so how the hell could they tell what the vehicle was :) :)

The 7.62cm Pak36(r) was nicknamed "Ratschbumm", or "crash-boom", due to the sound of its firing and almost instant impact, due to the high velocity of the weapon.

An excellent example of this was during the British "Operation Slendour" at El Alamein on the 21st and 22nd of July.
The two guns in PZGrenadier Regiment 104's anti-tank platoon destroyed 9 and disabled 6 Valentine tanks of the 40th Royal Tank Regiment on Ruweisat Ridge in the space of a few minutes.
"Air superiority is a condition for all operations, at sea, in land, and in the air." - Air Marshal Arthur Tedder.

I don't think the image is inverted. Look at the tree in relation to the guns.

Amilcar,

Here the inverted picture that now shows the same position of the 2 guns relative to the tree in the background:
