General v Gottberg

#1

Post by Elwyn W » 17 Oct 2012, 04:20

The top pic was labeled ObstLt v Gottberg Metzer IR 98. The second one was labeled Gen v Gottberg and his staff in 08.1918. I believe they are the same person.

1914 Rangliste had the Kmdr of Oldenburgisches IR Nr 91 as ObstLt v Gottberg (Döring Werner Franz von) with a BMV4mK and a SLH3. I think I see the 7th medal from the left of the ordensspange in the top pic as a BMV4mK and the man could be him with an upgrade to a Schaumburg Lippe Hausorden Offizier Ehrenkreuz during the war -- whcih was on his left breast underneath the EK1.

I need your opinion on the rest of the ordensspange -- RAO3, ?, KO3 or KO4, SA3mK, Sachsen Ernestinischen Hausorden, ?, BMV3mK or BMV4mK, ?, ?, ?.

What other postings and dates were there beside IR 91, IR 98 and 238 Inf Brig?
Cheers
Elwyn

Hi Elwyn,

the top photograph is of Oberstleutnant Lorenz v. Gottberg, commander of IR 98 from 21 May 1915 to 13 January 1917. He was a battalion commander in IR 55 in 1914 but although eventually commander of 96. Reserve-Infanterie-Brigade, did not rise to General officers' rank, being killed on 17 August 1918. The breast order is the Lippe-Detmold House Order Officers' Cross. This is the order he has had his orders and decorations mounted (although not per regulations).

RAO4Kr, KO4, DA, SA3aKr, HSH3a, HSAE, MG3Kr, AB3a, Zentenaar, Sachsen-Altenburg Jubilee Medal 1903.

The group photograph v. Gottberg is Generalmajor Döring v. Gottberg and the staff of 238. Infanterie-Brigade.

Döring v. Gottberg:

2 Aug 14: Commander RIR 79
22 Nov 14: Commander IR 158
21 May 15: Commander GR 2
18 Jun 15: Oberst
5 Jan 17-9Sep 18: Commander 238. Infanterie-Brigade
15 Jun 18: Generalmajor

Regards
Glenn

SLH3 (perhaps upgrade) versus LDHO.

Thank you, Glenn.

Glenn,
Between IR 98 and 96.RIB, Lorenz v. Gottberg commanded at least one RIR. Any idea which?

Since Wegner only listed regular regiments and for wartime units Bussche only listed commanders when formed, I have lots of gaps WRT knowledge od commanders of RIRs and LIRs.

Also, both buttonhole ribbons look the same to me, so perhaps one for the EK2 and one for the HOH3X? I would think he got the Lippe War Merit Cross too, but maybe he jumped straight to the LDHOX.

Thanks!

This looks like Döring v Gottberg of 238 Inf Brigade?

There was an Obst Laue whose last command was LIR 5 and a ObstLt de Rainville whose last command was GrRgt 89

Cheers
Elwyn
