► Photothread: SS Vehicle License Plate Photo Database

#1

Post by Bayerlein spirit » 20 May 2004, 12:38

SS Vehicle pictures with license plate - Database

You can post your pictures here :

- NO Museum picture

- NO renactement photos please

- License plate legible !

- All plate that begins with 0 (SS-08526) usually belongs to test or factory vehicle.

- The prefix SS missing for "Ardennes-Bulge" plates.

- Source as far as possible and copyright on the picture ( book scanning )

We will try to dress the picture with :

1. Number license plate
2. Model (Kfz,sdkfz...)
3. Unit
4. Picture location ( Front - city )
5. Date

The official list reckons that +/- 960 000 vehicles :

SS-1 ( Himmler BMW ) to SS-952161 ( opel blitz unit unknow - Hungary 1945 ) for the last number I saw...

This thread represents only a limited database ( of course )

More information :

http://chrito.users1.50megs.com/nummern ... ilung2.htm
http://www.ssocr.com/waffenss/wss_license.htm

HJ list Italian vehicles :
12.SS pioneer's bridging column, chassis numbers and number plates are included. Document is dated 23/4/44 and IIRC same vehicles were on strength 5/6/44.
Source is microfilm from US National Archives, T354 154.
And John Winwood Waffen SS license plate list :

Could be a very interesting thread. Perhaps it's a good idea to stick to posting photos with captions here and discuss the photos in seperate threads?

@ Bayerlein spirit:

May I suggest and ascending number index, with links to the pictures?

This way will be easier for the researcher/aficionado to look up a particular number plate or relate a unknown, undated picture/location to a picture already identified in the database.

also, it will prevent duplicate uploads/links and we will be able to see if a given number plate was used by two different vehicles in different dates

just my two cents

Thanks to your interest, Xavier...

So, your help very appreciate to drive this thread, I don't know how build a listing table in this forum with possible update.
And we can wait many new pictures to add-on one serious listing.

Fred: (I intended to send this as a pm, but I screwed ... :( )

great topic, and as I stated in the public thread, will be very helpful once it grows a little

we could do it this way:

have you seen my thread on dienstglas numbers? I just edit the original post once and again, inserting the new numbers, and references, and we could add a blind link (the kind only shows diff color, not the complete web address) to a posted image elsewhere (like webshots).

I think this will be a great tool, if you have seen my post in the lounge regarding "what is in your bathroom" in fact most of the books there were related to the original idea last week about ss plates, I wanted to see how many I could gather. ( more than a few, in fact)

the main enemy here, is believe it or not, censorship, in one of the books, of about 30 SS plates I considered to be "readables" more than 80% were erased by wartime censors...

I will start to gahter pics and info, and will upload in my photo server not later than monday, and let you know, I will try to post first a sample listing in the test section, for your aproval

very best regards from mexico!!

Hi again guys.

Here some more.

1513 - Car (towing pak) - 1.SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler - "Spearhead Volume 5: Leibstandarte - Hitler's Elite Bodyguard" (p.80)
It has the tactical marking of Infanterie-Geschütz-Kompanie. Have not yet been able to identify if it is the le.IG or the s.IG kompanie, altgough my guess is the s.IG.

76719 - Car - SS-Kriegsberichter-Zug 3 / 3.SS Totenkopf - Near Arras, France, may 1940 - "Weapons and Fighting Tactics of the Waffen-SS" by Dr.S.Hart & Dr.R.Hart (p.95) and a small picture of this vehicle can be foud on the following thread:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=47381
it's the bottom one  On the left fender is the totenkopf insignia and to the right above the spare tire is the tactical marking for a kriegberichterzug

108644 - Sd.Kfz 221 - SS-Pz.Aufkl.Abt 5 / 5.SS Wiking - Russia - Squadron Signal, combat troops number 3 'Waffen SS in action' (p.16) also on the following thread:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... c&start=15
4th picture from the bottom named '5th SS Recon Patrol, Russia 1942.JPG'. Althought here you don't see the actual number.

On a sidenote. Panhard 204(f) SS-5935 is a befehlswagen of 1./Aufkl-Abt.2 / 2.SS Das Reich, eihter France 1940 or Russia 1941. Of the few sources I've seen it's fifty-fifty. My guesses are with before Barbarossa as the vehicle seems "to clean" to have seen any combat. But then again I don't know a lot about this units combat history.
