Ron Klages
very interesting Topic;
But please correct the following: There has never been a StuG.Kp numbered the 1162 in the 62nd VGD. This was the 162nd. I´m not sure from where the error cames, but this error is to find on many places in the literatur, and also in the www. So you can find also Oblt. Horst Haase´s KC as beloning to the 1162nd; but remember: the 1162nd never was part of the 62nd VGD....
Additional: End of March / early April 1945 they received 9 Hetzer. Oberst Jüttner: "With these, Oblt. Haase was able to defend the americans very successful..."
January 1945: I have no clear numbers, but concerning different papers I own, there must be between 3 (early January) and 6 Stugs (in late January)
February 1945: Between 4 and 6.
In late March (Battle for the Remagen-Bridgehead) they lost during the battle for Oberpleis 2 Stugs. I´m not sure, but I think I have seen a picture somewhere in a book showing these two Stugs in Oberpleis...
Hope this Helps
Regards
Ralf

Excellent info.
I find it hard to believe that it took so long to develop and field the Hetzer. The Hetzer was not fielded till late 44 in ETO? The German army needed a weapon system like this in 1943. Every ID should have had a company in addition to ATG. I beleive that initial Hetzer units were actually panzerjaeger units and not assigned to ID? I would assume they went to eastern front (summer 44?).

Sorry Roger,
I know I can be a nuisance in these matters but the Marder III with the 11. PD were neither Ausf. H nor Ausf. M but Panzerjäger 38 t für 7,62 cm Pak 36 (Sd.Kfz. 139) which were in use with the 2./Pz.Jg.Abt. 61. They had been taken over from 273. Res.Pz.Div. in June 1944. All had been lost or some may perhaps have even been given back to H.Za. sometime before 1.11.1944. (BTW the divisional report shows still 7 by 1.8.1944, not just 2). After that the 11. PD reported Panzerjäger II für 7,5 cm Pak 40/2 only and those vehicles appear on the photo you are probably refering to, not Panzerjäger 38 t für 7,5 cm Pak 40/3.
Hope you don't mind and best regards,
Martin Block

Martin,
Nuts & bolts 18 in Table 5 says Pz.Jg.Abt. 61 received 6 "H" models from the Dec 42 production. On page 3 they state that the May 31 1943 "Typenbereinigung" could have possibly sent these from PD 11 to 31 Inf. Div. (then handover over again to the Armee-Pz.Jg.Abt. 743) with PD 11 possibly receiving Marder II (Sd.Kfz. 131) units.
From reading your post I don't think this contradicts what you said, but more or less confirms it if N&B 18 is correct.

Pz.Jg.Abt. 61
Hello Dubar1,
I know that table in N&B 18 because I was the one who prepared it ! However, looks like we're talking about two different things here. In early 1944 the 11. Pz.Div. was transferred from the Eastern Front to France for refit. It left behind all remaining heavy equipment which was then distributed among other units. So Pz.Jg.Abt. 61 arrived in France with nothing. It was rebuild using men and equipment from Res.Pz.Jg.Abt. 7 and 10 of the 273. Res.Pz.Div.. Records show that the 273. Res.Pz.Div. provided 9 Panzerjäger II für 7,5 cm Pak 40/2, 7 Panzerjäger 38 t für 7,62 cm Pak 36 (Sd.Kfz. 139), and 8 StuG III. By 1.7.1944 1944 the refitted Pz.Jg.Abt. 61 looked like this:
Stab u. Stabskp. (1 StuG III)
1. Kp. (1 StuG III + 9 Pz.Jg. II für 7,5 cm Pak 40/2)
2. Kp. (6 StuG III + 7 Pz.Jg. 38 t für 7,62 cm Pak 36)
3. Kp. (12 7,5 cm Pak 40 mot.Z.)
Vers.Kp.

Martin,
Thanks for that info!!!
I model in 1/6 scale and have been trying to model the 11PD. Here's a link to a Marder III Ausf H I've been working on:

I guess I'll have to keep it pre D-Day now
