usaaf BOMBING OF sOFIA

Was/were there any railway station(s)/marshalling yard(s) in Sofia? Or military barracks/depôts? Or factories that worked (also) for the military? If yes, then bombing these targets - considered as having significant military value - is justifiable. By contrast, DELIBERATE targeting of exclusively c...

Luftwaffe aircraft used post-war

As you may know, the Rumanians used several German airplane types post-war, right up to the early 1960s. Bulgaria did the same. There was a similar situation with Czechoslovakia, where even a few Me 262 jets were employed. AFAIK, Czechoslovakia exported some Panzers (Marders?) to Sweden. The USSR al...

USAAF bombings against Bulgaria

Can you be more specific as when, where and what sort of civilian targets did the USAAF 'exclusively' bomb?

Airplane type used by 2./NJG 100 in Rumania

Erich wrote: "they probably flew some pretty bizarre and older a/c since the flights were earlier in the war."

According to Michael Holm's excellent web site (http://www.ww2.dk), 2./NJG 100 had 16 Ju 88C-6s in July and August 1944.

NJG 100 in Rumania

In 1944, Russian/Soviet airplanes did fly over Rumania during night time on a regular basis (the so-called 'Tito Shuttle') and German night fighters did shot down a few of them. Therefore some of the 'kills' you listed might have actually been achieved over Rumania, even if the particular NJ unit wa...

NJG 100 in Rumania

A Luftwaffe Order of Battle from July 1944 lists a Schwarm of 2./NJG 100 based on Rosiorii de Vede, in Southern Rumania, while another one was listed on Zilistea, north-east of Bucharest. The same two Schwärme were also listed in an OoB of mid-August 1944. I have no info on other units of NJG 100 be...

RE: reply to various topics

Let me clarify a few issues. First, regarding the arrangement of colours on the Rumanian flag (I know it's a minor issue, nevertheless I want to prove my initial point). I have to correct Prejo in this matter. Here is an excerpt from an official Rumanian site (http://domino.kappa.ro/guvern/ehome.nsf...

RE: Hungary not a strategic target?

Two corrections: To Árpád: besides Hungary, Rumania and Slovakia were also bombed by all major European combattants: USAAF, RAF, USSR and Germany. I agree with you, Hungary was a major target for Allied bombing; however, to quell oil production was still paramount in view of the USAAF. In this respe...

USAAF airplanes lost over pre-war Hungary

American statistics mention that between April 1943 and March 1944, a grand total of 3048 B-17s and 6371 B-24s (no info on fighters) performed combat missions over Hungary's per-war territory. They dropped more than 26000 metric tonnes of bomb on Hungarian targets. During these actions at least 365 ...

USAAF formations that attacked Hungary in W.W. 2

The main USAAF unit targeting Hungary in W.W. 2 was the 15th Army Air Force (AAF). The main RAF night bomber/mine layer unit was the 205 Group. If you are interested in specific USAAF Wings, Groups or Squadrons, let me know that date, so I can check the units that took part in action. 'IAR80', what ...

I am sorry to correct you again, "Rommel".
In 1918-1919, Hungary was defeated by 3 armies: the Rumanian, the Czechoslovakian and the Serbian, with the tacit support of French troops. So that was also a multi-national effort.
