Bayonet identification

Hi folks,

I was hoping someone with more knowledge than myself might be able to assist in identifying this bayonet so I can find out a bit more about it, and just know it! I suspect it is British as it came from an elderly serviceman however it may not be.

Any help is very much appreciated and apologies if the answer is abundantly obvious!

It's a WW 1 German "ersatz bayonet", made from recycled other type bayonets with usually cast metal handles, fairly crude, many variations, etc. The wrap on the handle is not original, I'd removed it to see what's underneath. Many of the were exported to the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) during WW 1.

Hi John, cheers for the response. Having removed the string..... Yes, just metal underneath. Good to know.

Already have an 1874 gras bayonet..... Can see this becoming an unhealthy habit!

Collecting can become quite addictive, but very satisfying and rewarding. If bayonets are your thing, stick to European, Japanese, and US types, sheath is usually as important as the bayonet itself, when in doubt post pictures and we'll be glad to help.
