Any idea what this badge is?

Post by einwehrmann2 » 15 Nov 2011 17:27

I got this badge in a lot of German medals. I have NO idea what it is, but it is a very nice badge! It is made from 4 pieces, plus the pin . It looks like Silver & Gold, but it is not marked. Is it a rare badge? Or common? Thanks!

I don't think it is British. The inscription 'via crucis via lucis' is religious rather than military, and it doesn't look like a British badge (though gawd knows there were enough designs and variation!).

Could it be French? I see it has a fleur-de-lis on it.

"Via Crucis Via Lucis" - "The way of the Cross is the way of Light" and it's a notably Catholic motto, from Isiah 53. I think you'll find that it's a medal or badge from a catholic school or college; I've seen medals very like it before, with colour variations - and the little sub-shield with the fleur-de-lys is siting on top of a Cross on the lower division of the main shield; it should be there with those four "stars" around it.

Hi

I would agree that its most likely a badge/medal from a school, religious or otherwise.

You could possibly check out a Heraldry website to check on the heraldic shield which had the diagonal band, 3 stars above it and 2/3 diamonds below it, which may garner some clues to its origins!

Regards

I´m not familiar with badges of this kind but does it make sense to put the star (or maybe sun) to the shield like that? I guess not, of the rays one can see in front view just a very small part if at all. I don´t think it´s the original mount ;-)

Until we find out what it is, we aren't really in a position to say that; it could for instance be a "fisrt class" award...and without the star/sunburst it could be a second-class one.

I have this exact same pin. It was in my mother’s jewelry box. As far as I know, we have no Catholic heritage. She did have German ancestry.
