Unknown Totenkopf

Hi all. I'm researching some old family pieces and am having difficulty identifying some items, especially the gold totenkopf pictured. There are also some Polish war medals alongside it. I've been told that the skull came off the body of a Gestapo member but I don't know how accurate this is. Any info would be much appreciated, thanks!
