Does anyone have any information/opinions on what this might be? I've never seen one like this before. Is it a trench club? What else could it be?

Buzdovan as it is known in former YU, morgenstern in german... Next to digging spade one of best close hand to hand combat weapons.
Quite a popular item on Soška fronta (Isonzo front), especialy with Bosnian infantry regiments. If Italians captured you with THAT you didn't live long. I belive that on western front situation was similar.

Hello,

There is another variation depicted in Plate F figure 4 in the Osprey book "The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I (1) 1914-16" where the head is all metal and the handle is wood, the figure is a Landwehr holding it. I think these clubs were very universal in all the combatants’ armies.
