Fleet visit to Japan 1891

Post by jerryasher » 18 Aug 2021 23:57

Can anyone round out the details of the visit to Japan that year. One source says there were six ships, including the Dingyuan and Zhenyuan, but does not identify the other four ships. Likewise, I have the date of July 5,, 1891 as being at either Nagasaki or Yokohama. From where and when did they depart, arrive and then depart to return to China. Many thanks in advance. The trip is famous for Admiral's Togo's observation of the ships and their crews discipline.

Under the invitation from the Japanese Government, the Qing Dynasty Beiyang Fleet visited Yokohama on July 5, 1891.
Six ships, "Dingyuan"「定遠」, "Zhenyuan"「鎮遠」 , "Zhiyuan" 「致遠」, "Jingyuan" 「經遠」, "Laiyuan" 「來遠」 from Weihaiwei Jun 26 to Shimonoseki Jun 28, Kobe Jul 01. Add water and coal for 2 days. Reached Yokohama Jul 05 (3PM). Aug 04 return to China, Aug 11 Weihaiwei.

Interestingly, "PingYuan" 平遠 was not included in the list, but Admiral's Togo's observation include this ship. The amazing thing was Togo's saw cloth were hanging in the gun barrels, and Ping Yuan was in the Dock of Port Arthur waiting her guns to be installed.

Thank you L1E1, very much appreciated. Are you saying that the Tsing Yuen, remained in Chinese waters for some reason?

No in the first post I replied, I said 6 ships but I only mentioned 5 ships, one is missing.
It is because the translation is not in Wade–Giles but Hanyu Pinyin. It is hard for me to convert it to Hanyu Pinyin as I am not a native mandarin speaker.
