Imperial or Republican Marine Corps?

#1

The Imperial and Republican navies derived their organization and equipment from a wide variety of sources in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Western and "Western-influenced" navies of the same period(s) generally recruited a marine element, whether designated as such or not.

Did the Imperial or Republican navies organize marines, as such, or did they rely on armed sailors for port security, landing forces, and the like?

If so, did these elements drawn upon the examples of the RM, RNM, USMC in terms of doctrine, or from other nations?
