Dongting Lake campaigns

Post by Jerry Asher » 03 Apr 2007 07:13

It is clear that the Dongting Lakes west of Wuhan were a major transportation hub during the war between 1939 and 1945. Most references I have relate to air strikes by the 14th Air Force, and the Composite Chinese American Air Wing. Perhaps I am overlooking previous posts. A quick thumb nail sketch.

ist Changsha in 1939 no data although I am sure Japanese Army tranport companies and navy rivercraft would had been deployed.

IJA plans for early 1943 include capturing Chinese ships around Ichang. Hitonose, Toyo, Take and Shinkoku Maru's and river gunboats Uji, Hira, Seta and Sumida are present.
May 43 14th Air Force Ops are stepped up including June 43 damage to PG Atami by planes of CACW Nov 43 14th AF targeting of Japanese small craft on river and lakes.

1944 Battle for Changsha.

If possible could each of you add just one detail? Many thanks

Imperial Japanese Naval Forces in the 1st Changsha Campaign:

Naval Units - A part of Shanghai SNLF, 11th Sentai, 13th Gunboat Unit, 4th Guard Unit [4]

This involved an opposed landing at the mouth of the Mi-lo River on the Hsiang River "enemy marines, elements of 3rd Division (Uemura Column /29th Bde), scores of ships and more than a 100 motor boats. Troops are identified on map 17 of Hsu's History, as the Muragami Column). [1]

The Japanese did not have Naval landings in Changsha Battles 2, 3 or 4.

I think Dongting Lake was certainly disputed territory between 1939 and 1944 and probably til the end of the war.

Many thanks Asiaticus:

Let me try this another way. Does anyone have any information relating toYoyang, a railroad facility and port at the juncture of Dongting Lake region and the Yangzi? It seems to me to be the geopraphical center of any effort south to Changsha, and west to Ichang.
The area is a fascinating area of lakes, creeks and navigable waters. If not the IJN than IJA transport companies must be posted.

One reason I want to push this Asiaticus, is that while doing some sloppy research, I came across a Chinese language book called something like "the Three Battles of Changsha,"
it contained maps showing water borne movement and a representation of ships, something bigger than a landing craft. As I said my reserach was sloppy and the citation I wrote down to return to didn't work when I returned to the UCLA Library.

I'm picking up some references via air craft sorties. These are still to random to easily conform to Hsu.

Many thanks and warmest regards.

Chinese Winter Offensive1939 - 40

Post by asiaticus » 06 Apr 2007 12:41

If you look at the Chinese Winter 1939 - 40 offensive campaign one of the targets of the offensive was Yuehyang. The Sino-Japanese War(Campaigns in detail) thread on pg 11 has a discrption of the campaign of the 9th War area that was directed at cutting that city off and Wuhan too. It has discussion of the 3rd War area attack on the Yangtze River south bank outposts further east of Hukou. This was the time of the big threat. to communitcations between Nanjing and Wuhan and Yueyang. I dont think they were ever that seriously threatened again.
