Vickers 6-Ton Mk E & F in chinese army

#1

Post by Fabi » 04 Apr 2007, 19:30

As far as I know the Cinese had 20 Vickers Tank in use in 1936. My question is: How were they painted and where were they used? I know that one was captured in Shanghai in 1937. I have a few fotos with Japanese posing on it.
Thank you!

The Hoplite site includes a Renault NC-1 in Chinese colors; I know of no use of these vehicles by the Chinese, however the Japanese did use them, so perhaps its a captured vehicle.

Are you referring to the Ft-17? They are brought in by the Northeastern Army and the Yunnan Army.

Correction: it is an NC-27 (I will look up the NC-1), which was designated the Type 89 Otsu-B by the Japanese. Yes, the FT-17 was used by China, but the NC-27, which was a development of the FT, as far as is known was not used by the Chinese.

According to the site, The NC27 was brought in by Chang Tso-Lin of the NE Army in 1922. They are captured by the Japanese in 1931, and reorganized into 2 tank company with the captured FT-17. Some of the tanks are later transferred to the Manchukuoan Army.

I do not have other source to confirm this. But the Japanese also imported 10 NC27 in 1930.

How many NC-27s did Chiang Tso-Lin acquire?? I had not heard that any were used by any Chinese force, warlord or otherwise.

As I said, the website is the only source I have about Chinese use of the tanks. I am quite suspect that these tanks are imported so early. There are no reports of these tanks in combats in China. IMO they may have been used as test`/ research purposes.

I have to clear up some of the rumours.
First, I (and one of my friend who is an Chinese armor specialist) think that Chang Tso-Lin never bought any NC-27s or M1917s.
Second, there are many mistakes in the webpage http://www.hoplite.cn/Templates/hpjh0066.htm and http://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks/ , especially the former. Here are some of them:
1, China never bought any BT-5, BA-10 and BA-20
2, The armored force of KMT "central army" didn't have any Soviet-built armored cars, but Sheng Shicai(盛世才)'s troops in Xinjiang purchased some BA-6s, BA-27s and FAIs in 1930s. They never fought against Japanese troops during WWII.
3, The "6-wheel armored cars made in China"(中国制六轮战车) showed on the webpage are in fact Hong Kong Volunteer armored cars bought by Chen Jitang(陈济棠)'s Canton Government in 1930s. Some of them were later used in Canton to resist Japanese invasion in 1938.
4, About the Renault ZBs: KMT "central army" had Renault ZBs long before the "Wuhuashan Incident"(五华山事件) in 1945. However, they did took part in the fight in Burma.

Most published sources I have seen (ie: Zaloga's book on the FT-17) have indicated that Chang Tso-Lin acquired a small quantity of FT-17s after 1920. However, I do not believe I have never heard of or seen reports that stated that he acquired any NC-27s (Japan did, however).

YC Chen,

Do you have any information on the numbers of these vehicles that Sheng acquired? Also, while these vehicles were not used against the Japanese, do you know if they were used in either the 1937 battles with Ma Hushan's forces or by Sheng's successor against the Ili National Army in the late 1940s? Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer on these points.
