Oirob, do you know what the backstory is on these fellows? I would guess warlord troops of some sort based on their uniforms, but I'm not particularly familiar with the different factions' uniforms.
It’s a photo from a set of pictures from this eBay seller:
http://www.ebay.com/usr/colosseum1999
Description said "Qing Dynasty Chinese soldiers". That’s all I know.

Thanks for all of the contributions. Detailed information in English on the Sino-Japanese War is, in my opinion, sorely lacking. I hope that as interests peak more works on this conflict with focus on the battles in detail will become available.

Two photographs of Renault tanks in china. The first one is well known (often associated with the Second Zhili–Fengtian War) but I haven’t seen it in such good quality yet. The second one seems to be from the same event but was unknown to me until now.

Wonderful! I saw a set of photos showing Fengtian army's Renault FT including the first one(can't remember if they include the second one) on the newspaper "Beiyang Illustrated"(北洋畫報) which was sponsored by the Fengtian Clique, but with quite poor quality. The newspaper mentioned that these pics were taken by an American photographer whose Chinese name is 范濟時. From some of these photos it is clear that they were all taken during a military exercise.

However, it is the first time I see the original version of these pictures.

Thank you for the information about the photographs, Chen! I googled 范濟時 and found some of the images you mentioned, obviously from some illustrated newspaper.
As you said the photographer was American it would be interesting what his western name was. Google translator says “Van Hodges” but I can’t find any records of someone related to 1920s china with that name. Do you have any idea of how the name could be translated? Maybe it is possible to find more of the original photographs in some digital online collections…

This seems like a good clue -- assuming GoogleTranslate is working correctly, the man on the right of the photo is "Van Hodges": http://www2.jslib.org.cn/was5/web/detai ... elid=55021

That's correct. It also mentions that he is "美國萬國新聞社遠東專員", the Far East correspondent of a certain American news agency.

That text translates as "United Nations News Service Far East Commissioner," which led me to another possibility: An American named "G. Charles Hodges" was attached to the "Far Eastern Bureau" of the League of Nations Magazine in the late 1910s. In the GoogleBooks link below, he's referred to as "Assistant Director," but that issue dates to 1919, so he may have received a promotion to director (which I could imagine might be translated as "commissioner" in Chinese) in the intervening nine years between this article and the 1928 photo of "Van Hodges."

This is an interesting possibility, Steven. I found out that the Hoover Institution Archives holds a collection of "Charles Hodges Photographs (1939-1945)". Folder G of this collection contains “China – Miscellany”. Maybe this includes some images even older than 1939…

...and there is another record from the University of Wyoming - "Charles Hodges papers, 1933-1948":

Hello,

The caption is in Japanese, it says the photo shows piles of supplies donated by Japanese homeland in SNLF headquaters in Shanghai during the Shanghai Incident(I'm not sure first or second Shanghai Incident).

Interesting photo of a Vickers Vimy destined for China under construction in Vickers factory(photo from expired ebay auction).

Ironically they call it a "peacetime" production, but the Vickers Vimy would soon be used as a bomber in the turbulent Warlord China...
