The Manchurian "Old Marshal" is named [張作霖; 1875-1928], "Chang Tso-lin" in Wade-Giles, "Zhang Zuolin" in Pinyin.
His son, the "Young Marshal" is [張學良; 1901(?)-2001], "Chang Hsueh-liang" in W-G, "Zhang Xueliang" in Pinyin, or even "Peter Hsueh-liang Chang" after emigrating to the United States.

BTW, this is a great thread on Chinese FT-17 tank use and history.

According to WestSand the picture posted by Leo Niehorster was part of a film footage. The name Gamount that was on the picture caption was a french company that made news reels during that period. The company still exists and has a web site where like British Pathe you can search for the news reels. However I don't know french and I am unable to playback any of the reels they have posted. Does anyone know the footage reference number and whether a person can order a copy of the film footage or specific stills from it.

Thanks.

The company was spelled "Gaumont". I speak French, and might be of assistance. I will have to take a look at their site.

Thanks SASH155, sorry about the misspelling.

Like WestSand, I am interested in seeing the complete footage.

I am starting to wonder if they might have any footage of the Mukden military review. I know that several issues of the Illustrated London News from that period shows some photos of the Mukden military review which includes the FT17's and some of the artillery, however most of the photos are not very good.

It would appears that there have been some chinese publications (magazines and books) about Chinese AFVs prior to 1945 and I would like to know if anybody would know how to go about buying a copy of them.

Thanks everybody.

There is an English interface to the Gaumont-Pathé Archives:

The problem is that it is a Restricted area : "Your access is restricted to record description and storyboard.

This is the document in question found with "Tank" and date "1927":
Only the storyboard is avail. (4 pages) and no view of the Renault FTs (Note: FT-17 designation doesn't exist).

That's very interesting, thank you takata. Unfortunately it seems that the images cannot be enlarged.

Hello everybody,

I've been around here for a long time and now I finally registered.
I discovert a russian documentary film about Zhang Zuolin army called "Modern warfare in china 1924-1925".

http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/title/534725

May be the film contains scenes with FT-17s.
Has anyone of you seen this film or footage from it before?

Regards
Oirob

Hello,

it's me again.
I managed to sign and log in at the Gaumont-Pathé Archives.
A lot of interesting clips there and the clip-previews are of quite good quality.
In the "China war" - clip is a a very short scene (Carton 16/ Les tanks nettoient par le vide.) where some FT-17s appear.
Here are three pics from the preview-clip:

Note the Berliet cast turrets and the Hotchkiss M-1908 (British Mk. I) series LMGs on these FTs. The original mantlets seem to have been altered, or indeed removed entirely from these turrets.
