Soft skin vehicles in China 1935-1945

Post by Bill Murray » 28 May 2011 22:08

I thought to start what I think is a new thread as I have not found one on this subject in this particular forum.

My interest in the general area comes from my Father having served in China from 1937 to 1940, mostly in Peking, and the fact that I was born there in 1940. We left when I was 8 months old so I have no memories, only my Father's photos.

Primarily because I have concentrated for so many years on the general subject of soft skin military and captured vehicles, I never did much research on China as there were simply not many vehicles used up until around 1943-44 and those were mostly American and British vehicles we are already familiar with. However, finally at age 71 I retired some months ago and am just now starting to look around for other vehicles used in China. I have not found many but will start off with a few here.

I should mention again that the Chinese forces had very few vehicles so these first few are mostly those of the foreign contingents that looked after their countries interests in China during the "Concession" period.

Edit: Sorry, the second photo is what looks like a mid 1930's Dodge used by the Hitler Youth Winter Help Campaign in Tientsen
I hope others will contribute here as well.

And here is a 1937 Ford Station Wagon used by USMC as a patrol vehicle in 1940 in Peking.
Edit: And a prototype of the famous "Burma Dodge" built only for China and with RHD.

One more for today.

Not a good photo, but I believe it is an International Harvester of about 1934 used by the USMC.

Take a close look at the second photo. That was a Japanese vehicle, not Chinese. I have seen this photo before, it was taken in Wuhan in 1938, after Japanese troops had entered the city.

Thanks for the correction YC.
At least it still fits the criteria for the sub-forum. :)

Thanks for both of your responses, gentlemen.

It is my understanding of the topic "China at War 1895-1945" that any soft skin vehicle used by any nations forces or auxiliaries, ie Police, Diplomats etc. etc. should be eligible for posting in this thread.

As you probably know much better than I, China was in a sort of unique position from around 1900 to 1945 in that they had to give up the "Concessions" which were literally small sections of several cities where several nations established their own rule of law and had their own military forces based on Chinese soil as if it were there own territory.

I only mention this to indicate that over time, we will probably come across a lot of vehicles that are not "Chinese" or even "Japanese" for that matter. It is all part of the history of the time so let's be open about finding and posting photos that represent the era.

Thanks so much for participating.
