Classified Report of Unit 731 Found in Japan

A confidential report exposing wartime atrocities by the notorious Japanese military Unit 731 has been found.

The report reveals for the first time, that more than 26-thousand innocent people were intentionally infected with bubonic plague during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Written by a Japanese army surgeon during the 1940s, the report vividly exposes brutal germ experiments undertaken by the unit on civilians and war prisoners, most of whom were Chinese or Korean.

A civic group in Japan named "Revealing the Truth About Unit 731" says it found the document at a national library in Kyoto.

[Interview : Shigeo Nasu, Unit 731 archive center ] "The report clearly reveals statements written directly by the members of Unit 731. This is a very rare discovery."

The classified report also reveals that, from 1940 to 1942, Unit 731 had sprayed plague-infected fleas into the air and onto land near its base, which was located in northern China.

Thousands of innocent residents living near the area are assumed to have been affected by the chemical experiment.

[Interview : Shigeo Nasu, Unit 731 archive center ] "Germs were dispersed to nearby farmlands in northern China so there's a high possibility that many Koreans living there were infected with plague."

The Japanese government has always denied that Unit 731 carried out inhumane germ experiments on war prisoners and civilians.

But with these latest revelations, eyes are now on the Japanese government's reaction to the document.

Oops... They forgot to shred this one.

Seriously, I think the Japanese government just needs to come clean with what it did during the war years. Unlike the Germans, who were smart enough to face up to their misdeeds, and then moved on in the eyes of the world, Japanese incalcitrance has instead been burnished into the public perception that they're not genuinely apologetic.
