Chinese M3 Armoured Cars in Photos

Post by Puska 35.M » 22 Dec 2013 18:51

Does anybody here have any photos of the M3 4x4 serving with the Chinese during the Second Sino-Japanese War?

I am sacrificing speed here, for accuracy. I am doubtful if any of the M-3's made it to China. I think they were on the SS Tulsa when it docked at Rangoon, and most likely ended up in British hands. However, the lists I have over stuff diverted to the British includes jeeps but not the M-3's. At the time there were no Chinese Army troops in Burma, everything being moved via contracted third parties from port to railways, then north. Technically, in American "law," until May 1942, everything became Chinese when loaded on ship. Most likely, to me,if photo's of "Chinese," M-3 they are propaganda shots. Hope this helps. I can be more specific, but need a bit more time. Suggest "Tulsa Incident," as search term. Hope this helps.

I have the below photo. The caption says that it was taken in Yunnan, October 1944. It was supposedly taken during a parade for General Long Yun.

Thank you Pushka: I stand corrected--they made it over the Burma Road.

No problem. I was just hoping there were more/better photos.

I'll try to find some photos. It seems that there are not many photos of them. After all, I don't have much knowledge on later-war Nationalist armor.

Hi Puska:

No M3 yet, but while looking I ran across this M4A4 photo if it is of any help to your research.

Actually it's not much help, because I am looking for information on armor that made it into China proper. I appreciate it though. I have a book with some neat photos of an M4 with the turret and front painted like "mouse". Definitely the most unique paint scheme I'd ever seen on any tank!

OK, sorry it was not much help.

However, are you interested in vehicles that are not armoured as in cars and trucks etc?
I do have some of both in China proper if that would help.

Bill

I'm mostly interested in APC's and tanks.

Hello,

Have asked my friend about it. He said that there are atleast three origins of Nationalist M3s. The first is Lend-lease during WW2, the second is the "surpius equipment" bought by Chiang Wei-kuo in 1947-48, the third is American weapon export to Taiwan in1950s. They served in Taiwan at least until 1960s. He didn't know the exact number of them.

Thanks! Does anybody know the paint scheme given to the Lend-lease M3s? Specifically the locations of the sun markings, and any ID numbers.
