93rd Army Tengchong 1944

Post by keith A » 21 Apr 2015 18:03

Did Bai Chongxi(白崇禧) replace the executed commander of the 93rd Army in 1944? Also who commanded the 93rd during the battle of Tengchong?

regards

Sorry, my Chinese is non-existent and I have to rely on translations. MG Chen Munong was executed for abandoning his post during ICHI-GO and Stillwell states Bao Chongxi replaced him but the characters in your reply indicate another name.

The executed commander was 陳牧農 (Chen Munong) . He was under arrested on Sep 19, 1944. 甘麗初 (his classmate in Whampoa Military Academy) replaced him on Oct 18,1944. 甘麗初 was the last commander of the 93rd Army (disbanded on Apr 1945).

Of course, from Sep 19 until 甘麗初 could report duty, the 93rd Army was under one of the two deputy commanders 副軍長, either 符昭騫 or 胡練成.

Many thanks. So Gan Lichu takes command after the execution of Chen Munong, and until he arrives the army is commanded by MG Fu Zhaoqian or another officer. I have tried to trace the second name but no luck so far. I would assume Fu was the logical choice if he had been deputy since 1942?

Just found out whwere I went wrong. Bai Chongxi is given command of the 9th and 4th War Zones at this time. I assume they were linked with the area of operations of the 93rd Army?

I thought that Jiang Zaizhen (蒋在珍1896-1952) was a deputy with the 93rd?

Fu seems to have left the army in 1944, and Jiang left too. Were the deputies dismissed after Chen took command?

No. Fu still the Deputy until the 93rd Army disbanded. He was de facto the commander of 93rd Army since 1942. Fu was born in 廣西, he could speak local language such as Cantonese that make him an advance to communicate with most of the troops there. He was the one who stay in the battle field all the time. But he was not come from the Whampoa Military Academy. That said why he was not the official commander.

陳牧農 took back the role while the battle started and this Whampoa Military Academy officer killed himself by burning everything too early. Fu had no guilty because he refused 陳牧農's order. Furthermore he stayed two more days to make sure all the civilian could escape. He and his guards, only 120.

Superb. Thank you. I cannot find 胡練成 is that another spelling of 陳牧農? It isn't Jiang 蒋在珍 who has been a divisional commander and so this would be a demotion.

胡練成 Wu Lin Shing (Hong Kong Government official translation system HKGOTS),
陳牧農 Chan Muk Lung, (HKGOTS), but it could be translated as Chen Munong. It just depended on the one who wrote the book.

蒋在珍 is the commander of 新編第8師 (The New 8th Division).
