As a result of the truce between KMT and CCP, the Red Army was reorganized into the 8th Route Army & the New 4th Army , which were placed under the command of the National Revolutionary Army. The CCP agreed to accept the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek, and began to cooperate with KMT army during the battles against the Japanese invasion.
The 8th Route Army was re-designated from the part of the Red Army that finished the Long March and resided in North Shaanxi Province with around 46,000 officers & soldiers. The name was given on August 25, 1937 and changed to the 18th Group Army on September 11, 1937, under command of No.2 War Zone .
The New 4th Army was the part of the Red Army that stayed at South China initiating the 3-year guerilla war, without attending the Long March. They were re-designated on October 12, 1937 with 10,329 officers & soldiers, under command of No.3 War Zone.
