http://www.ww2db.com/person_bio.php?person_id=69 Here's some information on Zhang Xueliang, who was a warlord who held some territory in Manchuria, but sided with the Nationalists when Japan took the region.
Zhang Xueliang (aka the"Young Marshal") was the son of Zhang Zuolin (the "Old Marshal") and was warlord of Manchuria for a very short time between the death of his father at the hands of Japanese assassins and the conquest of Manchuria by the Japanese. He had joined the Guomindang by that time (which is what prompted the Japanese invasion) and became Chiang Kai-shek's deputy. Zhang later kidnapped Chiang in 1936 in order to get Chiang to cooperate with the Communists against Japan. Chiang agreed, though refusing to sign anything, and was released. Chiang then honored his commitment to what became known as the United Front by declaring war against Japan following the Marco Polo Bridge incident and resulting Japanese demands. Zhang Xueliang, however, remained under house arrest for the rest of his life and was never forgiven by Chiang.
