wikipedia has become a bit more informative to a degree about the warlords, so in that case, its a little easier to find stuff out. check it out, they are adding articles on the cliques, although short indeed.

What books(in English) would forum members recommend on Chinese Warlords?

Are there any books that deal exclusively with General Zhang Zongchang(The dogmeat General)?

One thing to do is read all the Time Magazine website arcived articles for China durnig the 1923-1937 period. Lots of interesting things there.
