Anglo French Union!

Post by Lord Gort » 02 Jan 2003 17:51

What if the French cabinet had a agreed to the creation of an Anglo French nation for the duration of the war as Churchill has suggested in the dark days of 1940? What would have been the consequences?

Possible French Civil War

Post by peter_suciu » 03 Jan 2003 01:46

No doubt that such a union of England and France might have actually started a civil war in France. That could possibly bog down the Germans and even allow the English to reland in France but actually there would probably have been little benefit.

A civil war might have dragged Germany and England into a deeper war in France and allowed the Soviets time to build up.

The Union could never have helped save the French mainland. They were too far gone by this pooint and the Germans to strong. Reynaud a real French patriot was all for it, but when the defeatist French Cabinet refused, he resigned. Long term benefits would be huge however.
*Fighting in the mainland would last maybe a month or so longer. This ties up more German man and air power for longer.
*The Sealion timetable would have been totally knocked of balance. BoB may not even occur.
*All of mainland France falls under German occupation. Resistance would greatly insist.
*The entire French empire and it's resources and manpower are behind the war effort.
*The French Navy was second most powerful in Europe IIRC. This would help immensly in the Med against the Italiens.
*With a French army (maybe a few hundred thousand with little armour but being replenished by British production) encamped in Algeria Mussolini might think twice about attacking the British. If he did so, chances of victory would be even slimmer with a second front to worry about. In time this force would only grow stronger.
*Less British help going top Russia. Reeqipping the French would be their responsibility untill the Americans are fully commited.

Well with the French Navy we may not have needed the 50 US destroyers all that quickly. The French North African armies would mean that when GB went to help Greece that Africa most lightly would be completly conquered. Also the $2 Billion dollars in arms orederd from the US from France would be paid for by France not GB saving some money that might mean that combined British French finances might remain solvent apst the treasuries assesment of december 1941 to possible a year after or more.
