Iceland in WW 2. Operation Ikarus, value therof etc.

Since it requires a continuously varying magnetic heading I would think even in those circumstances it would be difficult. I believe modern airliners for instance didn't really start using great circle routes until GPS was available. Part of that may have been air traffic control however.

Possibly - though I'd love to know from an ex-RAF navigator sometime as to what exactly their better instumentation did allow them to do - in the sense of what limits they could work out to. It's an area seems sadly lacking in the autobiographies and memoirs - pilots and airgunners seems to predominate LOL
Certainly however, the RAF and FAA stood a FAR better chance of simply FINDING Iceland in inclement weather than the LW did. And the fuel limits of some of the important transport aircraft types mentioned in this thread allow no margin for error.

This thread was allowed to remain open simply due to the fact that useful information was being generated in response to some of the more ridiculous claims being put forth. But it seems that it has now entered a death spiral of acrimony and cannot be justified on this forum. Therefore it is being locked and any attempt to continue this particular discussion in another thread will be dealt with harshly.
