One thing you would change

If you became Hitler's deputy, and was able to persuade him to change one decision which he made, what would that be?

I'm thinking of the brown shirts some branches of the SS (the SD for example) wore under their black jackets.

Oh. Well, that would have had a profound impact. I would have spiked his tea to get him to mellow out more.

Yes. Profound.

At lest it's something that can't really go wrong. If for example I'd got him to not invade Poland he might have done something worse who knows.

For some odd reason I would make him forget his treaties with Soviets in 1939 and to send lots of material help to Finland.

I would have tried to persuade Hitler to push on towards Moscow in Operation Barbarossa, I would have joined a few others with this opinion!

I'd tell him not to persecute the Jews or any other ethnic minorities, or at least not until after the war if he wouldn't go for that one. Immoral, inhumane, and a waste of time and resources (especially in wartime).

Rounding up the Jews and gypsies and slaughtering them didn't help the German war effort one bit (in fact it was counterproductive). All it did was enrich the corrupt SS leaders.

Security risk?

#10

Post by CHRISCHA » 17 Feb 2003, 23:28

If the policies of the third Reich were common knowledge, surely even at a low level those who were persecuted would be a security risk? It would be difficult to change the racial policies as even the invasion of Russia to provide 'living space' was in some way racially motivated. I do whole heartedly agree with the theory though. He may have even attracted more volunteers from the invaded European countries to fight against communism.

I would have persuaded him, in operation Barbarossa for him when the war in the North at Leningrad was going well he should have given more troops and reinforcements for them and they would have finished the job on the salient most of all some more tanks then they would have had them out-flanked and go step by step down the volga from the city and then Moscow onto Stalingrad. I was going to put the decision to eradicate the Jewish population of Europe, But that was one reason why he won over the public by blaming the Jews for everything.

On the history channel I heard that in 1941 Hitler beleiving the war was almost over banned further research on secret weapons. The idea was that it would be a waste of resources since they wouldn't them and the war was going relatively well. But in 1942 things had changed quite a bit and Hitler decided to lift the ban. Ironically because of this some of the weapons that showed later in the war the v2's and jet engine plans came in mid 1944 - a year too late. I would try to pursuade him not to ban the research would press him to try and find a way to bomb New York possibly by launching v2's from submarines). Sorry, I don't hate America but that's what I would do if I were Hitler's deputy.
