Alternate 1943 Med Campaign

Post by Von Schadewald » 30 Jun 2012 20:51

Rommel's nasal TB responds to treatment. He stays for Kasserine. Frühlingserwachen is a success, Bone & Tebessa falling. US casualties are horrendous. More Tigers & even some Panthers reach Tunisa. Shermans, Valentines and Crusaders are torched like fireflies. Monty bungles Enfidaville and the 8th Army is held at the Mareth Line and bled white. Hitler is resolved to keep a toehold in Africa no matter what. Fw 190s are pulled from the Eastern Front and with aerial convoys under their heavy escort, Hitler raises Axis forces to nearly 1 million men. All Fritz X production is sent to the Med and 4 RN battleships and 4 heavy cruisers follow Roma within the month, with heavy loss of live. Despite depleting the Atlantic wolfpacks, Dönitz order U boats through the Straits, where they take a toll of US troop freighters. Mussolini's overthrow is delayed and the Germans are still present on the African continent in early 1944.

Net result: war ends one month sooner than in OTL!

In 1933 Nazi Germany deported Dr Ernst Chain & destroyed his laboratory, field notes,& records.
Ernst, in Exile, shared the Nobel prize for medicine in 1945.
so Rommel's Nasal TB can't be cured.... :D
& the rest then cannot occur!

seriously:
Staphylococcus aureus has not had the attention it deserved because its list of famous victims is so short. Even famous illnesses caused by it have escaped bacteriological attribution. Queen Victoria’s armpit abscess in 1871 poured pus for days after it was cut open by Joseph Lister. All that is remembered is the carbolic spray getting into her eyes. Rommel’s swollen nose caused him to leave North Africa just before the battle of el Alamein to recuperate. Monty gets all the credit still. Failure to recognise the importance of Staphylococcus aureus has not been confined to hospital chief executives, journalists and members of the public. Their hand hygiene habits show that many hospital staff have been unaware of it too.

I assume by TB youmean "tough bacteria." Deporting Dr Chain ALONE cost wartime Germany over half a million PREVENTABLE BATTLEFIELD DEATHS.
THANKS FOR THE INTRO.. :)

Chain's speciality was antibiotics. A cure is not necessary. Send in Dr Morell, & Rommel will temporarily feel better, long enough to win at Kasserine!

German pseudo-medicine, to this day, makes no cures. But it makes people feel somewhat better, which counts for something!

Here is a list of everything the Fueher got injected with by 1945 as his morning 'fix'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodor_Morell
Unreal
Substances given to Hitler

Morell kept a medical diary of the drugs, tonics, vitamins and other substances he administered to Hitler, usually by injection or in pill form. Most were commercial preparations, some were his own. Since some of these compounds are considered toxic, many historians have speculated Morell may have contributed to Hitler's poor health. This fragmentary list of representative ingredients would have seemed somewhat less shocking during the 1940s:
Amphetamines
Belladonna
Atropine
Caffeine
Chamomile
Cocaine (via eye drops)
E. coli
Enzymes
Glyconorm
Methamphetamine
Morphine
Nux Vomica (a form of strychnine)
Oxedrine Tartrate
Potassium bromide
Prophenazone
Proteins and lipids derived from animal tissues and fats
Sodium barbitone
Sulphonamide
Testosterone
Vitamins
