The Moose incapacitated very early in 1940?

Post by Princess Perfume » 27 Mar 2023 18:08

Let's say Mussolini has a accident whether real or arranged in January-February 1940.

With the Moose now out of the picture before Denmark-Norway, what does Italy do under new leadership? What do the royal family do? What does Germany do? Britain? France? The USA?

The usual historical narrative is Italys entry into the war was purely Mussolinis impulse. This question has been asked multiple times before & the usual guess is the Italian leaders that replace him have a bit more sense & keep Italy neutral through 1940 & likely 1941. Both British and German political blundering are unpredictable variables. But, in fundamental economic terms it makes more sense for the Italians to remain neutral and profit from that position.

There may be good arguments for the other Facist leaders to enter the war on one or the other side, but I've not seen them presented.

With Italy neutral, what happens to to the other powers. The Med will be an Allied lake won't it? what about Japan?

The British had a problem with the Ethiopians demanding trials for Italian war criminals.
Too many people could be implicated.
The Med being a British lake was a problem to the Italians for years with Gibraltar.
Germany would have not ventured into North Africa.
