John Grigg made a case worth considering for the feasibility of a 1943 invasion in "1943 - the victory that never was". It seems very hard to envisage a troop build-up that would have allowed a successful 1942 invasion, although the US top brass actually argued heavily for such a solution. The air situation would neccessarily have been much less favourable. The experience with North Africa furthermore suggests that those who thought the US Army would do well to accumulate some experience before ttempting anything so major had a point.

cheers
