Life in the Reich

The only other ones I remember off hand were the yellow star, the red triangle, the black triangle, the black triangle with the A for arbiet (work),and a purple one for gypsies. And I think there was a pink one for homosexuals, I remember there was a category for them but I'm not sure if the color was actually pink or if that's what the current gay right's movement adopted.

I believe they were pink indeed. Which is probably why the current gay movement uses it today ;)

Without the benefit of hindsight, I would have done my duty in the army when I was called up.

If I were a 3rd Reich Juden citizen, I would have been probably killed before the end of the war.
If I were a proud German, I would have liked to be a tank commander, destroying T34s, before being killed by a IS, SU 125 or during an American bombardment (preferably Normandy)
If I were a proud German Fraulein, I would have probably been raped for 100 times by a Russian, after the battle of Berlin.
If I were a German scientist, I would have probably been working on Cape Canaveral today
well, a German sniper would also fit me...

Damn. Am I only one who would prefer quiet life in Norway above glorious death in the battlefield? :P

Greetings,
Firstly, I must say I think this is purely fictional "whatif" topic and Timo, don't take amost of this seriously what most people say here :)
Secondly, about grandfathers and warheroes... one of my grandfathers were in german army, waffen-ss but artillery or supporting infantry for artillery regiment (20th SS.division) mostly (atleast I have picked out of what he talked about this, because he mostly talked about women and such stuff:), and later was in resistance. Another grandfather and his father were sent to GULAG (guess most of you know of this) for my grandgrandfather fought vs early russian communists 1918-20 in Estonian Independece war (and he was actually warhero indeed, on armored train - rescued life of one most famous leaders back then, Kuperjanov. There was even article with picture in newspapers, my grandmother still has this I think). My mother was born in Siberia, not in GULAG exactly but near it.
So thirdly I think everyone gets idea why I wouldn't stay away from fighting (either as partisan or "forest brothers" as we called our resistance or as in German army). Besides most of my friends grandparents suffered and fought in war too. Against Soviet Union mostly that is.
Regards

I would have tried to meet as many beautiful german ladies as I could.

I think I would still wanted to study engineering. Luckily I would have ended up in USA working for NASA so I could bring my childrens to DisneyLand.

Hello everybody!
Very interesting that almost no germans are taking part in this what if stuff..
I´d like to tell what some real persons did:
One grandfather served in WWI in Palestine and Syria and was too old for WWII except some silly Volkssturm action at the end of war.
The other grandfather served at Somme in WWI in 117.Inf Regiment, out of his III.Bat. only 80 survived. At the beginning of WWII he volunteered but was rejected because of old gas injury and being a specialised metal worker he supervised Ukrainian Ostarbeiter and should have gone to steel plant at Charkov in `43, but C. was already retaken. When he saw the Volkssturm in `45, he did not take part in such nonsense. His son. my father nearly got killed by American planes straffing everyone out on the street and later by American artillery shelling the little village for three days. In `56 he joined US Army, served in Vietnam and is now American citizen.. Very strange!
My mother was raised by Ukrainian Ostarbeiterin, Maria, who later was forced to dig anti-tank ditches at the Westwall and perhaps got killed. But perhaps she survived and I hope that she did and is perhaps now old babushka. I`m married to Ukrainian wife, Natascha :) , so family is somehow linked to Ukraine.
Two brothers of my mother served in the Army, one was first flak-helfer, later he fought against Canadians and demobilised himself.
The other one was paratrooper but never saw a plane from inside. as his unit in the West was destroyed, he went to relatives in pommerania. There he was picked up by Waffen SS who wanted to form some kind of alarm unit or kampfgruppe. They where taken prisoner by Red Army. All SS men where shot, only he was spared thanks to his Luftwaffe outfit. So he returned from Russia in ´49.
One relative was killed in action near Leningrad, another first had happy time as Luftwaffe officer at airport in Netherlands, but then he volunteered for the East front and became Batallion commander, after the war he first was treated as kind of war criminal and had to clean the streets.
Looking at family history and trying to imagine the situation without the knowledge of today I certainly would be in the Wehrmacht (too small for Waffen SS and not very sporty), perhaps I would have studied medicine and became field surgeon, perhaps just ordinary Infantry at the Eastern Front. My secret wish however would be night fighter pilot shooting down Lancaster bombers before they are able to throw bombs at my home town Nuernberg!

Is it too late to change my mind?

I would have been gassed.

with a name like samuel, and being circumcised, how much more jewish could you get? :D I could never convince anyone i wasnt jewish

anyway, If I was born then, those two factors may not be. still, if those factors werent so, how should I believe any factor making my personality what it is now would have ever come to fruition? so situation could equally drive me to be a Nazi, or communist, or part of the edelweis pirates. etc. there is no telling. but I would be too short to join the SS (I am 5'7")
