commissioning ceremony

#1

Post by mark harrison » 08 May 2017, 18:02

Hi, Can anybody throw some light on the commissioning ceremony such as , How long was it? Did it start and finish at a set time etc.

Be grateful for any replies as the position of the sun can sometimes be useful in photo investigations.

Have been informed that the ceremony started before midday, enemy action allowing.

Regards MH.

Hi
Mark
Have been here in the past http://historisches-marinearchiv.de/pro ... php?lang=2
Put in all u-boats and comissioning and if they have a time it will show, most seem to be 0800 to 11.30 but instances of evening times as well
No idea as to length of ceremony etc.

Hi Thanks for the info Nobby-The shadows on the pictures of U 803 commissioning show that the crew and officers were there for a considerable time approx four hours at least. I always try to use shadows to orientate the photos to estimate the approx time or date.

regards MH.

Quite often the time of commissioning will be noted in the boat's first KTB. If there is a particular boat you are interested in let me know.

Hi Thanks for the post. What I am trying to do is to build a set of photos from a series of commissioning locations that are sunlit.
If I have enough samples from the same locations where the ID of the boat is confirmed I can use the shadows to estimate the approx date and then ID boats which have not yet been identified.

Hi Nobby, U-889's KTBs did not make it through the chain of command in time to be archived and captured so I can't say what time it was commissioned. Cheers, Jerry

Hi Nobby Am looking for one with the location confirmed and with shadows-sunlit in otherwords .
I never noticed the time either on the docs, will try to build up a picture on my database.
I believe most commissioning started at 11.00 hrs.
regards MH.

Hi
Thanks Mark, most of the times I have found, range from 0800 to 1940 but the average seems to be between 10 and 12. ALL need now is an unknown boat being comissioned in "sunlight"!!!
Thanks "skip" I have gone through all the first patrol KTB and archived the info.
