Pillenwerfer

Hello
Can anyone tell me the chemical composition of the pillenwerfer. Did a forum search and did not get any answers. Also which company manufactured it for the Kriegsmarine? TIA

Hello Imad,

the thing the 'Pillenwerfer' fired was called 'Bold' (pl. 'Bolde') in Kriegsmarine slang. It was filled with 'Calciumhydrid' (sorry don't know translation).

Thank you there. I believe the translation would be calcium hydride.

As I recall, exposure of Calcium hydride to sea water results in a violent reaction of methane production. When the U-Boat releases the gas it leaves a dense trail of small methane bubbles. This mass of bubbles is supposed to reflect the ASDIC/Sonar echo, making it look like a detected sub.

Side note: This was shown in the old move 'The Enemy Below', although it looked more like a trail of ink was being released . . . :D

Does anyone know the month of 1942 when the Boldschleuse (Bold decoy dispenser) was begun to be serially fitted to front boats, either by the ship builders or the front bases?

Wikipedia and author Eberhard Rössler only state the year, 1942.
But starting in which month of 1942?

Here is a clue:
http://www.uboatarchive.net/U-331INT.htm

A Boldschleuse (termed submarine bubble target, S.B.T., by Allied intelligence) was fitted to U 331 in Salamis in April/ May 1942.
This appears to be an early fitting, but probably not the earliest...
