Well, while waiting for lionfish's question - here's another to ponder -
This -
U-boat.jpg
- under this -
Commanding officer.jpg
Commanding officer.jpg (5.83 KiB) Viewed 692 times
- had a somewhat nervy encounter with a plucky British merchant-navy Captain. Whose ship and behaviour under attack -
not only confused the U-boats crew, but led them - after several wasted torpedoes and the aggressive maneuvering of
the target ship, to abandon the attack......

Which ship was under attack, which U-boat and which commander?
Bonus - for the name of the British Captain......Varjag

Ellerman-Hall Lines s/s CITY OF AUCKLAND is right. Her captain - E. J. Myles - gave Bleichrodt a tough time making him believe he was dealing with a Q-ship.....
Might have begun Bleichrodt's path to a nervous breakdown later.

All yours!

Hello oldhoweboy
This incident occurred on 6/July/1941 in the Atlantic 300 miles West of Madeira island.
Is described in the book "Hirschfeld the secret diary of a U-boat" by the Wolfgang Hirschfeld ISBN-304-35498-8 page 59-64.
