From Corbis
Hitler, accompanied by Admiral Erich Raeder [left edge] and Capt. Prien, decorates Prien's U-boat crew after they sank the British battleship Royal Oak at Scapa Flow, with the loss of 833 British sailors.

Did Hitler have a long lasting admiration for the U-Boats from his WW1 service?

From Table Talk,Hitler at Ostend in 1917(from a defunct website that carried all of Table Talk):
We then received orders to march to Ostend for a test. The Regiment arrived there in a most deplorable state. Any Russian regiment, after a five-hundred-mile retreat, would have looked like the Brigade of Guards in comparison. While in Ostend I had the chance of going for a short trip on a submarine, and the sailors, smart, efficient, turned out always as if for a review, were magnificent!

Thats an interesting photo Peter, thanks for posting it.

The LI is KL Hermann Laufs a pre-war u-boat officer who rose to Korvettenkapitän and was awarded the DK in Gold.
II WO Ludwig Förster of course became commander of U 654 and was killed in 1942 when it was sunk by USAAF north of Colon/Panama and Georg "Gunner" Lassen won the Knights Cross and Oakleaves as commander of U 160 becoming one of the premier u-boat aces.
