George, this emblem was also re-used on U 862 in her voyage to the far east, many of whose crew came from U 251.
Hello

My opinion :
U 251 was U-Boat Type VIIC.
U 862 was U-Boat Type IXD2.
George's photo shows U-Boat Type VIIC belonging to the 11th flotilla.
U 251 emblems :

Then I think that it is about U 251 belonging to the 11th flotilla between 1 Jul, 1942 and 31 May, 1943.
Here is a photo of U 251 (Narvik in 1942) :

Yes, U-251 operated with U-flotte 11 from Narvik on nine war patrols. It's first patrol was against westbound convoys QP11 and QP15 from Murmansk. The bear wappen relates to an attack between Bear Island and North Cape, 1st May 1942, scoring a hit on SS Jutland. U 251 returned in 1943 to Königsberg for an extensive refit in 1943. Timm's crew were reassigned to U 862 in August 1943 and she was commissioned in October.

Also relating to U 78, Guðmundur Helgason of uboat.net is convinced a type VII with a red dragon wappen operating from Gotenhafen was U 78 but I believe it was U 71. Any thoughts on this please?

Wappen referred to appears at this website (scroll down the screen to thumbnails)

Hi Hundi! Not so sure, but I think 265 119 to. means the tonnage sunk by this boat (although the official tonnage is 200 124 GRT).

May be, the first figure was U-boot crewmembers' own estimate of tonnage sunk by them?

Best regards, Aleks

I also think so,in most cases U-boot crews own calculations were higher than real.
