Carl Emmermann (March 6, 1915 Hamburg - March 25, 1990 Ahrensburg)
Carl Emmermann (Crew 1934) sank a total of 27 ships with a combined tonnage of 52,080 GRT in five operational patrols (373 days at sea). After joining the submarine force, he became the I WO of the U-A under the command of Hans Eckermann in November 1940. In November 1941, Emmermann took charge of his own boat, U 172. His greatest success was the sinking of the British liner Orcades (23,456-ton). After that patrol, Emmermann became the commander of the 6. U-Flotilla in St. Nazaire, France, in November 1943. In August 1944, Emmermann became the head of the "Erprobungsgruppe Typ XXIII" and later (March 1945) was commander of U 3037 for a month, and in the last month of the war he commanded the 31. U-Flotilla (Training) in Hamburg.
Awarded the Knight's Cross for the sinking of 17 ships with a total of 9.5429 GRT (27 November 1942) and the Oak Leaves for the sinking of another 10 ships with 5.7475 GRT (4 July 1943).
