U-Flak but which ?

#1

Post by lionfish » 22 Jun 2015, 18:18

Hello,

This is the first time i see this flak-tower.

http://www.ebay.de/itm/10106-Foto-U-Boo ... 3f4e3318b9

This is not U 441. Maybe U 256, U 621, or U 953 ?

Best regards,

Lionfish.

I think it's Turm V, I can see two AA at the rear zone.
Only U 362 had Turm V.

Thank you very much for your answers.

I think this is a Turm VII. We can see crews walking alongside the tower. It was impossible to do that with a Turm V.
Look at this link : http://www.ubootarchiv.de/ubootwiki/index.php/U_676

" Die Fahrt: U 676, unter Oberleutnant zur See Werner Sass, verlegte von Kiel nach Danzig. Auf der Überfahrt wurden Versuche mit der Turmform VII durchgeführt. "

Best regards,
Lionfish.

There were only 7 Uboots that were to be Uflaks. Four were completed, the rest were in the process. After it was realized that these AA Boots would not work, due to modified RAF attacks with multiple aircraft and ships simultaneously, the original four Boots were refitted and the other three were cancelled. I did make a 1/72 scale Model of this type of Boot. With twin Flak Vierlings and a duel 3,7cm gun. These Submarines only carried 5 Torpedos, one in each tube. For self defense. They needed the extra space for the additional ammunition and 28 crew members. The extra crew were gun crews. The Flak Vierlings used magazines, each only lasted 6 seconds during firing. You can imagine the loaders stayed busy.

Oh, when your trying to identify these Flak Boots keep in mind that many Uboots modified their AA batteries. Especially after being damaged from air attacks, etc. They changed turms and gun mounts. Added guns. They were not specifically designated Flak Boots, but appeared to be such. See; U673, which I used for my style of Flak Boot. That was the only type of gun mount deck I was able to purchase without buying two complete Submarine Models. I got the turm IV mount from Nautilus. Their molded parts are delicate and leave something to be desired. Had to fabricate a lot of parts. Nautilus makes beautiful wood decks though. The Uflak Boots had to remove the forward deck 10.5 cm gun and Snorkel to fit in the forward Wintergarten. Remember that when ordering the wooden deck.

The U 673 was not named as a Uflak perse, but you can see the extra gun mount and tower armour. When I made my flak boot I fabricated the supports from spue and railing from small screen fencing. I made the forward cable support from steel.

The U 505 located now in museum of Science and Industry in Chicago received heavy damage. They replaced type II turm afterward with type III. Removed deck gun also.

These are a couple of pix of the completed Uflak I made. It took several after market kits and parts from other Models. Also I fabricated many parts from scratch.
