the location Lorient is confirmed by the three-funnel-ship visible in the background, since 1936 a barracks ship, before that the light cruiser STRASBOURG, ceded to France by Germany according to the Peace Treaty of Versailles (1919) in 1920 and before that (1915-1920) the light cruiser REGENSBURG of the Imperial German Navy.

According to the sources here we see the U 94 of the Kplt. Herbert Kuppisch after his arrival at St. Nazaire, apparently carries two life preservers on the bow on the conning tower. (In fact it's U 48 - thanks Pikap)......................
