Nobby,

nice pic. And yes, you are increasing the dificulty level. But today is Champions League day, so we had to come to grips with it fast.

Its U 870 returning from patrol, probably near Kristiansand South. Wind deflector partly carried away.

Best wishes

Axel

Is that an emblem on the tower? Can anyone make something of it?

Horrido,
can anybody tell if U 870 had a "Schnelltauchback"?
In the book "Vom Original zum Modell: Uboottyp IX C" there is no indication that U 870 was equipped that way.
I remeber a reportage done by the WDR (end of WW2, 70 yeras ago) with a statement of a former crew member of U 870 saying that the boat had such a modification.
Can anybody proof this? Are there any pictures showing the full hull of U 870?

Kind regards, Kurfürst

Hello Kurfuerst,

No infos about this on U-boot-archiv.de : http://www.ubootarchiv.de/ubootwiki/index.php/U_870

But... if you look very well the picture on ebay.de you can see ( maybe ) a curved rail on the deck forward the coning tower and a curved edge forward the schnorchel head. http://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-2-U-Boot-mi ... SwPCVX~ceZ

I think schnelltauchback wasn't noted on archive for all u-boot.
For example U 853 : I saw on the movies made by scuba divers this submarine was fitted with the Schnelltauchback an a schnorchel typ 2. I found any infos about that and i supposed the schnelltauchback was a typ B as with U 539.

Best regards,

Lionfish.

Hello,

Please, do you have pictures about U 878, U 879, U 880 and U 881 with the schnelltauchback ?

U 878 seams to be the only u-boot fitted with the schnelltauchback to reach St-Nazaire.

Lionfish.

Gentlemen,

I don`t want to step on anybody`s toes !!!!.

Found on EBAY.DE, it looks like a Schnelltauchback to me.

Hi Lionfish,

At the time of commissioning, UAK trials and training, U 870 did not have a magnatic house compass, only an Askania in front of the tower.
I don`t have photographic evidence regarding the liferaft containers, only a coloured drawing.
It shows U 870 had four liferaft containers, but that`s not proof (marked in red).

I think the Schnelltauchback Type A is build between 01-07-1944 - 27-08-1944 together with the snorkel in Oderwerke AG, Stettin.

Hope this helps.

my best regards,

Ron.

Hello Ron,

Thank you for your help. I saw the liferaft containers at the same place on your drawing only on U 170 pictures at Lisahally, with just two liferaft containers.

Best regards,

Lionfish.

Hello,

I'm trying to do a list of the positions about the liferaft containers on u-boot typ IX.

U 155 typ IXc: One in forward the end of the backboard rail. And One Startboard side of the wintergarden.
U 170 typ IXc40 : Two between the schnelltauchback and the curve of the rail in backboard.
U 190 typ IXc40 : None on the forward deck and One Startboard side of the wintergarden. ( Note U 190 was the only ship to keep his old compas house and to have the schnelltauchback )
U 195 typ IXd1 : No picture and no information.
U 516 typ IXc : One Forward the Askania. ( Schnorchel typ 2 )
U 530 typ IXc40 : One forward the Askania
U 534 typ IXc40 : None in forward deck and two on the rear of the wintergarden. ( Schnorchel typ 2 and a ring float head )
U 539 typ IXc40 : None in forward deck and two on the rear of the wintergarden. ( Schnorchel typ 2 and probably a ring float head. Schnelltauchback typ B )
U 541 typ IXc40 : Two on the rear of the wintergarden ( One on the center rear and One on the startboard side )
U 548 typ IXc40 : One Startboard side of the wintergarden.
U 802 typ IXc40 : One forward the Askania.
U 805 typ IXc40 : None on the forward deck and none one the rear of the wintergarden.
U 806 typ IXc40 : No information but only five places on the forward deck.
U 853 typ IXc40 : No information on the forward deck and two on the rear of the wintergarden. ( note : some films on youtube show U 853 was fitted with a schnorchel typ 2 maybe with a ring float head and maybe with a schnelltauchback typ B )
U 858 typ IXc40 : One forward the Askania.
U 861 typ IXd2 : Two on the rear of the wintergarden.
U 862 typ IXd2 : Two on the rear of the wintergarden. ( Note he kept his 105mm deck gun and was fitted with a schnorchel typ 1 )
