The VII/IX was obsolete at the onset of war?

Post by Felix C » 21 Sep 2017 21:54

Shipborne radar defeated night surface attacks. ASDIC tracked them underwater. Escort Groups meant subs would be tracked until contact lost or destroyed. long range aircraft meant surface loitering was not feasible. Short range carrier aircraft meant closing a convoy on the surface was not feasible.

At the onset of the war there were insufficient ships and trained crews. By early-mid 1941s we see the three Aces sunk using tactics which worked in the scarce Allied resources of the early war years. 1942 East Coast USA & Caribbean Drumbeat an aberration and temp. stay before the boats came back into the Atlantic.

Not taking into account Ger. operational weaknesses such as excessive radio use.

what say ye?

These were mid-late war exigency.

Ship borne radar didn't materialise until 1941 [2 years into the war]

In the first year of the war 480 convoys were sailed in north Atlantic and most had only a couple of escorts and some trawlers. Not that much of a problem for the U-Boats, especially when the woflpacks were mobilised .

Carriers rarely escorted convoys until MAC & CVE . Those didn't materialize until 1943/44 when only 110 Convoys Sailed covered by 30-60 CVE/MAC...only 10 escort carriers existed in 1942 - covering 280 convoys.

Hi Because I run a high security setting on my computer certain pages show up as attack pages the above link showed that message on my build.

My security settings may be much higher than yours-but I decided to warn the forum. It may be that my settings are set too high for normal use and that there is no problem for users with a standard anti virus or spyware programme-but if there is a risk the forum will sort it out.
regards MH.
