Schornsteinfeger

Post by oldhoweboy » 08 Dec 2017 14:05

HI
I know that the translation of Schornsteinfeger is chimney sweep but what does it mean in U boat language? For example
U 390 was having an Installation of "chimney sweep" in Gotenhaven August 1943. It was removed in November at Kiel.
Regards
Nobby

Hi Nobby, Like the red and white spotted mushroom, chimney sweeps are supposed to bring good luck in German tradition.

I have found regerences to an Emblem and more important anti-reflective material. The same question about U 390 has been discussed on this site: http://www.forum-marinearchiv.de/smf/in ... pic=8817.0

Hello
Thanks for your help, I did not think it was an emblem as I have seen an emblem on U 390 of a sailor holding a torpedo.
Have read the forum links you posted, interesting stuff!

Hi Nobby, I can only think that the chimney sweep refers to a nickname for some aircraft detection device or anti radar device on the boat itself or the snort. I shall have to research this.

Mark & Noddy
Thanks, but can't really take the credit for knowing what it was. I just searched the net for "u boot + the word" and found the reference. Did a new search with "Kriegsmarine" and word and found some more in "google books". First mentions the term in nglish,
what it is based on an interrogation. It also mentions a scientist by name. Second has a picture of a painted snorkel and a lot of tech stuff on radar detection etc. Hope they are of more use to you than me ;)

HI, This last link has provided me with the only working description of the courier signalling system, and solves the mystery of chimney sweep nickname if you read it all.

Thanks.

Hi Waleed, Yes your book links work-even on my very security prone system. I just read the last link first, now I have checked the others.

Hi!

From a German cover name list:

Schornsteinfeger B

[Involved:]
Marine/Dr. Bachem
IG-Farben
AEG-Elektrochemie
NVK [Nachrichtenmittelversuchskommando] Kiel
Böhm [?]

Versuche über Ruckstrahlverminderung im Zentimeterbereich. [Tests about the reduction of return beams in cm-range.]
Tarnung von U-Booten gegen feindliche Funkmessortung. [Camouflage (-material?) for submarines against enemy radar.]

Schornsteinfeger T
Marine/Telefunken

Wie Schornsteinfeger B
[As Schornsteinfeger B]

For the "version-letters" please check who is responsible in Kriegsmarine:
Schornsteinfeger B = Bachem
Schornsteinfeger T = Telefunken

Best wishes
Rolf
